Thats just what I use on Vista and I assume its similar on Windows 7. But I can't say for sure.

Ciyrus: Bring up your device manager for "Playback Devices". You can usually access it by right clicking on the volume control near the clock. See if there is a device calledDigital Output Device (SPDIF Out)and make sure it's disabled. You might then be able to play the game without needing the microphone attachment.

I had the same problem with Windows Vista: when loading a map it exited the game. I dunno about windows 7, but on Vista it was a sound card issue: i discovered the problem when I tried to connect the laptop to the television set via my AV output: when changing av mode, the sound card activated the external part that sends the sound to the AV port and that is what prevents the game from working. to get it working again, I had to go into my devices manager and switch off the external function of my sound card.

sorry i forgot something:

Go to START,
then click on CONTROL PANEL.

Be sure you aren't under "classic view" for the control panel. You know if you are not in classic view if you see categories such as "System Maintainence" and "Security." If you haven't tampered with the settings, then your most likely not in the classic view.
Anyway, then click on HARDWARE AND SOUND,
and then click SOUND.
A window will pop up.
Navigate to the RECORDING tab in the top,
then RIGHT CLICK on some open white space
and select "Show Disabled Devices."
Hopefully, if you are still in the RECORDING tab,
a new icon will appear called "STEREO MIX."
RIGHT CLICK on the SETEREO MIX icon and select "Enable."
